Blackjack has always had a certain allure for me. Even as a child, I loved to play blackjack on Windows 95 (yeah that shows how old I am). While in the beginning, I did not really understand much except that I had to keep drawing and get as close as possible to 21, I soon learned the intricacies of the game.
To date, I still marvel at the challenges that blackjack poses. That is why I get more than a little riled up when I hear someone say that this card game is a mere game of chance. To a certain extent, yes I do see how chance plays a role in the game. In fact, I guess you could say that chance has a significant role in blackjack – especially if you have no idea about what you are doing, as I was when I first started playing as a kid. One could win big without even knowing why and one could lose even bigger without understanding why.
If you take a closer look at the mechanics of the game, however, you will see that you can gain a deeper understanding that will let you know how to win, and how to do it methodically. Therein lies the challenge. Thinking about the endless possibilities and permutations with various factors such as the number of decks, your position at the table, card counting, and so on – these should be more than enough to give you a clue that while chance does play a role, your smarts play a much more significant role here.
